At once delving into this question and offering a practical guide to subverting racial power relations and the politics of the ‘gaze’, Beyond the Feminine looks at the black and white female dichotomy. It examines how light skinned black and white women are privileged over dark skinned black women in music videos, advertising, and even in classic paintings. Focusing on race as implicit in constructions of gender, the works discussed deconstruct the links between race and gender to expose embedded power relations.
