CHINATI: THE VISION OF DONALD JUDD LAUNCHES AT DAVID ZWIRNER
To celebrate the publication of Chinati: The Vision of Donald Judd, David Zwirner is hosting a reception and book signing with Marianne Stockebrand at David Zwirner, on Saturday, December 11, 4-6pm
About the book:
The famed Chinati Foundation is widely considered one of the world's most important destinations for experiencing large-scale contemporary art. Located on 340 acres in Marfa, Texas, the Chinati Foundation was founded by Donald Judd (1928-1994), whose specific ambition was to preserve and present a select number of permanent installations that were inextricably linked to the surrounding landscape. Construction and installation at the site began in 1979, and the Chinati Foundation was opened to the public in 1986.
Chinati: The Vision of Donald Judd is the first comprehensive overview of the museum's history and collection. Edited and principally written by Marianne Stockebrand, Chinati: The Vision of Donald Judd also describes how Donald Judd developed his ideas of the role of art and museums from the early 1960s onward, culminating in the creation of Chinati (and including its two predecessors—his building in New York and his residence in Marfa). The sumptuously illustrated book (with 149 color and 71 black-and-white illustrations), co-published by Chinati and Yale University Press, begins with an introductory essay surveying the history of Judd's work in Marfa, then presents the individual installations at the museum in chronological order, with stunning photography.
Individual installations at Chinati are presented in chronological order with stunning photography; these include work by John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, David Rabinowitch, Roni Horn, Ilya Kabokov, Richard Long, Carl Andre, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, as well as by Judd himself. His installations at Marfa include 15 outdoor works in concrete and 100 aluminium pieces housed in two carefully renovated artillery sheds. The book also features writing by Judd relating to Chinati and Marfa, in addition to a complete catalogue of the collection.
The book's design is by Rutger Fuchs, who has designed all of Chinati's printed materials since the mid-1990s; principal photography is by Florian Holzherr and Douglas Tuck. In addition to the essays by Marianne Stockebrand, the volume contains texts by Rudi Fuchs, former director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; Thomas Kellein, director of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld in Germany; Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate in London; Richard Shiff, professor and Effie Marie Cain Regents Chair in Art at the University of Texas; and Rob Weiner, associate director of the Chinati Foundation. Also featured are writings by Donald Judd relating to Chinati and his other buildings in Marfa. A detailed catalogue of the collection and artists' bibliographies are included as well.
Published by Yale University Press in association with the Chinati Foundation/La Fundación Chinati. Edited by Marianne Stockebrand. Contributions by Rudi Fuchs, Donald Judd, Thomas Kellein, Nicholas Serota, Richard Shiff, and Rob Weiner. A special limited edition of 250 copies is also available, numbered and signed by the living artists represented in the Chinati Collection and housed in a cloth clamshell box.
