The first Medium Tank M4 'General Sherman' tanks rolled off the production line in February 1942, remained in production for the rest of World War II and was still in service two decades later. Almost unwittingly it was the most important weapon the U.S. Army deployed on the land battlefield and production exceeded 49,000, but it also had glaring faults and weaknesses.
