ART LOS ANGELES CONTEMPORARY 2011

Directed by Tim Fleming, founder of Fair Grounds Associates, producers of the fair.

Barker Hangar, Santa Monica
Friday, January 28th to Sunday, January 30th

January 2011 marks the second edition of Art Los Angeles Contemporary, the International Contemporary art fair of the West Coast. Formally at the Pacific Design Center, the 2011 edition expands to the historic Barker Hangar in Santa Monica from January 27–30. The fair will accommodate 70 top established and emerging galleries from Los Angeles and around the world. The weekend boasts an extensive roster of on-site programming, lectures and panels with prominent Los Angeles artists, curators, and arts professionals. Art Los Angeles Contemporary spotlights the Los Angeles art scene, while hosting the international art world for one weekend in January.

Programming Highlights for the 2011 edition of the fair
Verse / Chorus / Verse, an onsite amphitheater by artist Liz Glynn
Artist Liz Glynn will build an on-site amphitheater within the fair as a gathering point for art, musical, and spoken word performances happening throughout the duration of Art Los Angeles Contemporary. Programming will include performances by artists selected by Human Resources, conversations organized by artist-run space Dan Graham, and readings and music curated by Liz Glynn. Following on the heels of Glynn's successful pyramid constructed in Lincoln Heights over the summer of 2010, the amphitheater will be constructed out of packing crates and salvaged lumber, and will be housed in a large tent adjacent to the Barker Hanger. Glynn's transient and ephemeral work was recently shown in the Younger than Jesus exhibition at The New Museum and has been reviewed in the New York Times and Artforum.

Special Appearances by West of Rome with Marnie Weber & Jennifer Bolande
Pasadena-based non-profit West of Rome, directed by Emi Fontana, produces site-specific sculpture and performance pieces by artists Marnie Weber and Jennifer Bolande.

Plywood Curtains installed at the Barker Hanger, is a continuation of West of Rome's Women in the City Series. Jennifer Bolande's Plywood Curtains are a series of site-specific sculptural installations designed to activate the windows of empty storefronts all over the greater Los Angeles area.

Marnie Weber continues to explore the role of horror in her work with a quiet infiltration on opening night. In addition, Weber will screen her new film, part of the Eternity Forever body of work. The film adopts the expressionistic aesthetic of early black and white silent movies. The pure and innocent Gothic heroine, played by Marnie Weber, is depicted in a mystical landscape populated with a menagerie of the grotesque.

X-TRA'S 1 IMAGE 1 MINUTE
Art Los Angeles Contemporary in collaboration with Creative Artists Agency present X-TRA'S 1 IMAGE 1 MINUTE. This year's program will benefit both X-TRA and LACMA's Art Here and Now program, which supports the museum's acquisition of works by emerging Los Angeles-area artists.

The 1 IMAGE 1 MINUTE event is based on Micol Hebron's column in X-TRA, which is a recreation of a project produced by Belgian director Agnès Varda. Varda invited various people in and outside the art world to respond to photographic images for one minute. She presented the results on French television in 1983.

Previous years' presenters include Benjamin Ball, Walead Beshty, Leslie Dick, Shannon Ebner, Charles Gaines, Piero Golia, Rita Gonzalez, Todd Gray, Karl Haendel, Stanya Kahn, Liz Kotz, Thomas Lawson, Aram Moshayedi, Kimberli Meyer, Dave Muller, Leonard Nimoy, Karthik Pandian, Jan Tumlir, and Catherine Taft.

This event will take place Friday January 28, at 8pm at CAA in the Ray Kurtzman Theater in Century City.

Tickets for this event will be available starting mid-January.
